What It Really Means to Follow Your Heart: A Conversation with Dr. Camilla Buchanan

There are some women whose stories stay with you long after the conversation ends. Dr. Camilla Buchanan is one of those women.

On this episode of Fanatical DreamHer, I had the privilege of sitting down with a woman whose life reflects courage, discipline, reinvention, and deep personal truth. Dr. Buchanan has built an extraordinary legacy as a physician, a pioneer for women in medicine, a champion cyclist, and a woman who made the brave decision to live life on her own terms.

What struck me most during our conversation was not only what she accomplished, but how she accomplished it. With honesty. With determination. And with a willingness to keep listening to her own heart, even when the path in front of her was not the easiest one.

Dr. Buchanan did not begin her journey planning to become a doctor. She was a chemistry major at William and Mary, and like many women of her generation, life unfolded in ways that were not always predictable. She got married, started a family, taught school, and supported her husband while he pursued law school. Later, while living in Okinawa during his military service, she met women physicians whose work opened her eyes to a possibility she had never seriously considered for herself.

That moment changed everything.

She went on to become the first woman with children admitted to the Medical College of Virginia, now Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. That alone is a remarkable part of her story, but what makes it even more powerful is how hard she had to fight for the opportunity. She advocated for herself, pursued interviews, completed extra coursework, and proved that motherhood and ambition could exist in the same life.

Her story is a reminder that sometimes the door does not open easily. Sometimes you have to knock again. Sometimes you have to write the letter, make the case, and believe in your own potential before anyone else fully sees it.

As Dr. Buchanan shared her years in medicine, I was especially moved by the depth of meaning she found in caring for women. As an OB-GYN, she was present for some of the most intimate and life-changing moments a person can experience. She spoke about birth, illness, healing, and even end-of-life care with such clarity and reverence. You could hear the weight and beauty of that calling in every word.

She also spoke candidly about sacrifice. There was no sugarcoating the demands of medical school, residency, or the impact those seasons had on her family. I appreciated that honesty. Too often, women are shown polished success stories without the truth of what it took to get there. Dr. Buchanan offered something far more valuable. She offered wisdom, and reminded us that there is a price to all of this.

And then there is the other remarkable chapter of her life: cycling.

In her late thirties, she discovered a gift for the sport and went on to achieve incredible success in competitive cycling, winning national championships and world titles. That part of her journey is such an important reminder that it is never too late to discover a new strength, a new joy, or a new version of yourself.

But perhaps the most powerful part of this conversation was Dr. Buchanan’s reflection on authenticity. She spoke openly about a pivotal turning point in her life, when she realized she was in love with another woman and had to decide whether she would remain inside the expectations placed on her or choose a life that was true to who she really was.

That kind of honesty takes courage. That kind of choice takes courage too.

There is so much in this episode for women of every age. It is about ambition, yes. It is about perseverance, yes. But it is also about self-respect, self-awareness, and the lifelong work of becoming who you were meant to be.

Dr. Camilla Buchanan’s story is a beautiful reminder that a woman can have many dreams across one lifetime. She can lead, begin again, change course, discover new gifts, and still remain true to herself.

I hope this conversation encourages every woman listening to trust what is stirring within her. Your path may not look traditional. It may not look easy. But that does not mean it is not yours to walk.

Listen to this episode of Fanatical DreamHer, and share it with a woman who needs the reminder that her life, her dreams, and her voice matter.
